Network Association
What does the Network association do?
The Internet is provided by the Network group in our house. We get our bandwidth (currently 1 Gbit/s) from the IT Center Aachen and distribute it via Ethernet and WLAN (Eduroam) in the dormitory.
Besides the administration of the network, the following topics are also part of our tasks:
Administration of the websites
Are you interested in programming and/or web design? Or would you like to learn programming? We manage the website of the dormitory and also the bar (symposium) as well as internal wikis and our internal administration website. Keywords that might arouse your interest: Python, WordPress, PHP, Django, Git or LDAP.
Network technology and servers
In order to provide all residents with Internet access, a good network infrastructure is of course required. This is currently being modernized! Keywords that might arouse your interest: Virtualization, Proxmox, Ceph, 10Gbit or Cloud.
We definitely still need people to build and administrate this together with us! No Pre-knowledge? Never mind, we don’t have or didn’t have any either. 😛
Planned projects
We also work on other projects depending on time and desire. If you have ideas for projects, you are welcome to contact us at any time. For example, we are planning an NFC access system for the fitness room, which would allow residents flexible training times. Also possible would be a dormitory printer, where the residents could print for material costs. The problem of payment and print job management would be interesting to solve here.
If we have aroused your interest, please come to our weekly meeting (currently Thursday evening, best to ask beforehand by mail or telegram if and where it takes place).
